What Is A Single Storey House?
A Single Storey house is one with only a single storey/floor. So you won’t have any stairs in a single storey. A basement does not count as a storey. You can even get ‘fractional’ houses with 1.5 or 1.75 stories available. It depends on your budget and your preferences.
Why Do Some People Say a Single Storey House Is Better?
A single storey home makes the best use of square footage as there is no space wasted on stairs or secondary HVAC systems. Quite often customers find a single storey home with less square footage to feel larger than a two storey home that has much more, simply because the open floor layout can feel so luxurious.
Should I Build A Single Or Double storey Home?
This depends on what your preferences are. The single-storey will typically be cheaper, and less hassler to create (you don’t have to think about the upstairs when creating the downstairs). However, the double-storey home will allow you more space (all things considered) and you can make use of the traditional Double storey layout – bedrooms upstairs, kitchen and living rooms downstairs. This provides a neat separation between the sleeping areas and living/dining areas. You also benefit from the view.

The consensus has always been that a single storey home is more energy-efficient because heat rises, resulting in a larger temperature variance and additional burden on climate control systems. And this is correct since warm air will always make a beeline for cooler air to balance things out. But it could also be argued that double-storey homes are more space-efficient. More land is needed to build a series of single storey homes.
